What is Upholstery?
Upholstery in simple terms is the materials and processes used to make a comfortable and durable covering for a seat. The word upholstery comes from the Middle English word "upholder" used to describe an artisan who makes furnishings.
Traditional Upholstery
Handmade, bespoke furniture (pre 1950) using traditional methods and materials. Layers are built up by hand using materials that include webbing, hessian, coil springs, tacks, animal hair, coir and wool wadding.
Modern Upholstery
Handmade, bespoke furniture using modern methods and materials. Layers are built up by hand using modern materials that include rubber/elastic webbing, tension or zig zag springs, staples, polyester wadding and foam.
